The memory unit was smaller and thinner than his little fingernail. Dimitriy Kozlov, as Randy Tucker, had no problem implanting it in his forearm, just under a layer of biosynthetic skin which shielded it. After spending years on the base, he had finally devised a method of stealing computer data without leaving a trace. Taking advantage of a rare moment away from telecameras and prying eyes, he had acquired the information that he considered most useful to the motherland. Having to obey orders like a nobody, having to emulate the Americans' behavior, even pretending to be friends with them, was a real pain. Despite that, he was a trained man, convinced of the importance of his mission, without a wife or a son who might influence his decisions. An elite soldier ready to die for his country. Like many of his companions, he slept and ate at Dulce. After having utilized the implant, he had to wait five endless days to get a pass. Forced to cross under the ever-vigilant holoscanner, the fear of being discovered caused him severe anxiety. Making an enormous mental effort, he was able to camouflage his state of mind. He passed the readers with the utmost ease and nothing happened. The skin shielding seemed to be working. He was about to exit, when the voice of another employee stopped him.

“Hey, Ray.”

Kozlov was startled.

“Yeah?”

“What're you doing?”

“What do you mean?”

“Don't act like you don't know.”

Dimitriy was prepared to knock out the employee and attempt the flight of the century.

“That Sox game tonight. Who are you going to watch it with?”

“No, sadly, no game tonight,” Kozlov replied with fake regret.

“You going out with a girl?”

“I hope...”

“Have you at least set up the holo registration?”

“Of course. What do you take me for?”

“Have a good night, Ray.”

“You too.”

He failed as an American, Dimitriy thought as he resumed walking towards the exit. He had gotten to know that employee months ago. The guy always talked about baseball, a sport which, among others, he hated and knew absolutely nothing about. For some unknown reason, this guy was convinced that Ray Tucker was a big Chicago White Sox fan. But after having spent time together, Kozlov thought they had gotten past that tedious topic.

Once outside, Dimitriy gave a broad smile.
